Grand Court 6 opening event

On 10th September 2016, our club celebrated the opening of its newest show court, Court 6. This fantastic, newly-built addition to the squash section of Leamington Lawn Tennis and Squash Club was opened in style by world-class stars of squash Mohamed El Shorbagy, Cameron Pilley, James Willstrop, Laura Massaro, Sarah-Jane Perry and Tesni Evans. The event was supported by England Squash, Sport England and Karakal and Tustains Jewellers and C4 Logistics.

The day began with training for junior and senior players with a team of Karakal up-and-coming stars, which drew a crowd eager to learn from the pros. The afternoon began in earnest with a 12-team Frantic Squash tournament in which whole teams worked together against their opponents to achieve the highest scores.

The winning team, Richard Lonsdale, Sophia Lee, Dean Kimbrell and Iain Stokes won a hit with the stars before all the other players took their chances.

After a buffet in the bar, the court was opened by the Mayor of Leamington Ann Morrison and the squash stars amid tumultuous applause. Special thanks were made to Chairman Ming Lee, project manager Colin Quinney, architect Richard Noonan and club coach Jason Pike.

Ming Lee said: “It is extremely unusual for a club exhibition evening to attract a six-player line-up all of whom could be seen in the final stages of a major world squash tournament. Leamington’s reputation as a squash club is growing and we are delighted that such high profile players have chosen to celebrate with us.”

Club members then settled down to watch 2 hours of excellent exhibition matches filled with trick shots, eye-wateringly long rallies and cheeky chat with the markers.
